Akiko Kamiya was born in 1973 in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.
She graduated from Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts’ Department of English, Faculty of Liberal Arts.
After graduating from university, she studied for one year at the University of Technology, Sydney, where she acquired a license to teach at local junior and senior high schools in Australia. She then taught Japanese at junior and senior high schools in Melbourne for around 2.5 years. Following that, she returned to Sydney and worked for about 2 years as a coordinator for a travel agency specializing in language training.
In her late 20s, she returned to her hometown of Hamamatsu where she worked as a temporary worker for various companies, taking charge of English clerical work, overseas user support, English manual creation, and in-house technical translations.

Thoughts on Translations

Translation isn’t simply the rephrasing of words into a different language. It is the appropriate expression and conveyance of the original author’s intentions in another language. Words and culture are one and the same, so the act of translating into a different language means you are engaging in cross-cultural communication. When I translate, it is important for me to make sure that there are no communication gaps between the different languages and cultures I am working with. Therefore, I strive to correctly understand the meaning and intent of the original document (source language) and translate it so that the same meaning and intent are reflected in the target language.
